Transforming Senior Care
Connections is about much more than reducing costs. The initial motivation of most organizations is to break through the social isolation of their clients. The effects are often life-changing. Clients talk about breaking down their walls and moving out of isolation to re-engage with their families and the world.
Connected clients become partners with staff. They become evangelists and trainers of other clients, releasing staff time and unleashing creativity to improve services. Clients and staff have led action to improve processes as diverse as food services, and automated tracking of maintenance requests.
Families, who typically live in a connected world, usually feel distressed and guilty that their unconnected loved-ones are more and more difficult to engage on the other side of the digital divide. With Connections, clients join their family (and staff) in a shared online communications style.
Many organizations rely on volunteers to enhance their services and reduce costs. Volunteers feel more engaged with their clients and enjoy the transformation they undergo as they connect to the world. Mutual connection leads to a deeper and more satisfying bond between client and volunteer. The organization can better document volunteer activities and volunteers can share experiences with other volunteers.
“I had no idea I would be able to communicate with family and friends without difficulty. I send pictures, text messages, voice recordings and receive the same. On voice I sang “Danny Boy” to my granddaughter in Dublin – and she replied with a photo holding a pint of Draught Guinness from a pub in Dublin. With my hearing problems I have trouble talking with people on the phone - In those cases I text. Also leaving phone messages, often they don’t get through especially if it is your son-in- law at the other end, but with TEXT you usually get a response. Photos are great – you can send them thousands of miles – a picture is worth a thousand words. I just finished hooking a rug – a picture of my home in N.S. – and I sent photos to everyone and got amazing texts back. I had severe head surgery recently and sent photos to all my family as recovery progresses.”
“Prior to my introduction to the program my sole contact with a computer had been limited to bank ATMs. The fact that I am now able to renew contacts with friends and relatives from far afield has been not only been an interesting learning experience but has allowed me to contact people that it would be difficult to do otherwise. I have enjoyed the learning experience very much and would highly recommend it to any other senior."
“The application has been specifically designed with seniors in mind, enabling them to actively engage with technology and all that it has to offer. New relationships have developed between Veterans using the technology and a few of our Veterans have been paired up with high school students. As a result, some lovely and unexpected friendships have blossomed. This technology has enabled them to connect with others in a more immediate and spontaneous way, which has proven to be very meaningful.”
“It’s been an amazing experience to introduce it and see them embrace the technology and use it to connect with family and friends. It opened a window to the world outside their room and enhanced their ability to connect and stay engaged. My veteran finds it not only very useful but “fun” as well and that from a 94 year old!!”
“Profound hearing loss can make for a very lonely existence ... however, my Father is no longer alone. This communication tool has bridged so many gaps he now shares pictures, videos, audio and text messages with friends and family on a daily basis . Words cannot express my gratitude for the ease of this program achieving something I never could!"
I have very poor vision and this system allows me to contact family members very easily. I’ve noticed the younger generation prefers this method to the telephone. With this system I don’t need to look for stationary, or stamps, or postal codes. It has been a most exhilarating experience for me."
“ I do have a laptop, but it has caused me no end of frustration. As I have no family in Canada, it has helped me keep in touch with people here and abroad. For me, it is tops!”
“It has helped me keep much closer to my family, I think it’s helped my concentration, probably helped my spelling also."
“I find the program very simple to operate and since using it have been corresponding much more with relatives and friends. I can also check back on previous photos and messages which is not possible on my phone."
